Orthodontics and Myofunctional Therapy
Myofunctional therapy is an orthodontic treatment method aimed at resolving issues in the mouth and jaw area by normalizing the functions of muscles and tissues.
There are many vital functions related to the face that are important in orthodontics. These include chewing, speaking, breathing, swallowing, jaw joint movements, and the functions of facial muscles. All of these are directly connected to one another.
Any dysfunction in the mouth and facial area can lead to issues in other areas. For example, we swallow approximately 3,000 times a day, and during each swallow, the tip of the tongue should touch the anterior part of the palate. This is the normal process. However, if there is an incorrect swallowing pattern, where the tongue pushes against the upper teeth during swallowing, the upper front teeth can protrude, and the upper jaw can narrow, causing nasal passages to constrict. When the nasal passages narrow, individuals begin to breathe through their mouths, leading to a cascade of issues, especially in growing children.
Conversely, if mouth breathing occurs due to an obstruction in the nasal passages, the tongue will position itself in the lower jaw, preventing the proper development of the upper jaw, which can lead to narrowing and forward movement of the upper front teeth. When closing the jaw, the lower jaw may shift to one side, potentially affecting the jaw joint.
Therefore, any dysfunction in the facial and oral region can affect neighboring organs, and there are many such examples.
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is a muscle-exercise-based treatment designed to enhance the durability of orthodontic treatments and shorten treatment duration during the development of the face, jaw, and teeth. These exercises should be performed daily after 30 minutes of wearing the myofunctional appliance, with each activity lasting approximately 2 minutes. Once the exercises are completed, the myofunctional appliance is put back in the mouth.
It is crucial to perform these exercises every day to achieve optimal results. For the therapy to be effective, the activities and appliances must be used correctly and consistently. Wearing the myofunctional appliance for at least 2 hours a day and throughout the night is essential for the success of the treatment.
Our Goals with the Use of Myofunctional Appliances
Ensuring proper facial development
Contributing to the correct alignment of teeth
Preventing the recurrence of dental misalignments
Expected Benefits from Myofunctional Therapy Appliances
Expansion of the upper jaw
Strengthening of lip muscles
Growth of the small upper or lower jaw depending on the source of the problem
Reduction in dental crowding
Correct positioning of the tongue during swallowing and rest
Transition from mouth breathing to nasal breathing
Shortening of orthodontic treatment duration and increased treatment stability
