Choosing the Right Toothbrush and Brushing Properly

Unless otherwise advised by the dentist, soft or medium-hard brushes with tiny heads, dense bristles, rounded bristle tips, and straight-cut bristle bundles should be used. This allows for simple access and cleaning between the teeth and across the mouth. It is recommended to change the brush every three months on average. Use the toothbrush to clean both your teeth and your gums. The brush should not be wet, and the paste should be used in chickpea-sized amounts.

Brushing should be done by placing half of the bristles on the tooth surface and the other half on the gum surface, tilting the brush head 45 degrees, without using too much force, not lifting the brush head, and following a specific sequence.

It is possible to effectively clean these places where bacteria develop by manipulating only the bristles in tiny round circular motions. Brush your teeth and gums twice a day. The average brushing time should be three minutes. Hard and inappropriate brushing method (right-left movements) causes gum recession, loss of material, and sensitivity on the tooth surface, and caries and gum diseases cannot be prevented since the full cleaning effect cannot be achieved.

Interface Cleaning

Brushing cleans the front-back-chewing surfaces of the teeth, but not the side surfaces. These surfaces can only be cleaned with the use of a dentalip. The use of an interfacial brush and mouthwash are auxiliary tools for flossing and are not a substitute for flossing. Flossing should be done once a day, preferably in the evening after brushing. During its use, the dentalip should be placed gently without damaging the gum at the interface and the cleaning process should be carried out with up and down movements from the inside of the gum to the chewing surface.

Interface Cleaning

Brushing cleans the front and back chewing surfaces of the teeth, but not the side surfaces. These surfaces can only be cleaned with a dental floss. An interfacial brush and mouthwash are supplemental aids for flossing, not a replacement for flossing. Flossing should be done once per day, preferably in the evening after brushing. During use, the dental floss should be softly put to avoid hurting the gum at the interface, and cleaning should be done with up and down movements from the inside of the gum to the chewing surface.

Oral Care for Babies

At the latest by the time the child becomes one year old, the first dental appointment should happen about six months after the first baby tooth develops. Only then, the dentist can follow up the child, warn the family about wrong eating habits and inform the family about caries prevention practices. For the purpose of treating potential caries lesions as soon as they arise, it is crucial to keep up these visits every six months. The eruption and loss of teeth should be taken into consideration while choosing the appropriate therapies.

Bacteria are the cause of tooth decay, a disease that can be passed from mother to baby. Because of this, tooth decay and other illnesses can be spread by kissing the infant near the mouth or cooling the baby's bottle or feeding spoon in the mother's mouth.

Oral Care in Children

Dental cleaning in children should start with the eruption of the first tooth, that is, when it takes its place in the mouth. In this period, cleaning of the teeth should be done by the parents with sterile gauze swabs without toothpaste.2.5-3 years of age, following the end of the milk teeth, the use of brush and paste can be started.

It is very difficult for preschool children to apply a technique for tooth brushing. The important thing at this age is to give the child the habit of brushing teeth. When children brush their teeth, they often brush the visible or easily accessible sides of the teeth. However, in order to prevent cavities, the interfaces and chewing surfaces of the teeth should be cleaned much better. For this reason, it would be good for the parents to check after brushing. Toothbrushes suitable for the size of the child's mouth, made of soft and nylon bristles should be used.
